Mexstreyaz 2022

Inauguration of the Mechanical Engineering association MEXTREYAZ for the year 2022 was held on 6th May 2022. The chief guest of the day was Sri P Damodaran, Division Head, Aerospace Mechanisms Group, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Thiruvananthapuram. Dr Ashalatha Thampuran, Director, and Dr S Sheela, Principal, graced the occasion and addressed the students. The function was formally inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp. Dr B Sivasuramonian, HOD, Mechanical Engineering, delivered the welcome address. Sri P Damodaran delivered a talk on ‘Staging systems and mechanisms in launch vehicles’ which emphasized the current technology that is being put to use in the aerospace arena. Students organized the competition events ‘Le Mans’ and ‘CAD IT’. Winners of Le Mans were Mr Adarsh V Suresh, S4 (1st) and Mr Vittesh J Nair, S4 (2nd). For CADIT, the winners were Ms.Devaki Nandana P, S4 (1st) and Mr Nithin Krishna, S8 (2nd). Cash awards were given away to the winners by the Chief Guest and Principal. Mr Gokul PK, Student Coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks. The students had put in their effort and time to decorate the department aesthetically. There was a wholesome participation from the students and the atmosphere was full of excitement and joy.

A slotting attachment for a center lathe is a device used to perform slotting operations on workpieces. It’s typically mounted on the cross-slide of the lathe and powered by the lathe’s spindle. The attachment consists of a ram with a cutting tool that moves vertically to cut slots into the workpiece held in the lathe chuck.

The attachment usually has adjustments for controlling the depth of cut, feed rate, and position of the cutting tool. It allows for the creation of slots, keyways, and other similar features on cylindrical or round workpieces that would otherwise be challenging to machine on a lathe.

Slotting attachments increase the versatility of center lathes, enabling them to perform additional machining operations beyond turning and facing. They are commonly used in manufacturing environments where precision slotting is required, such as in the production of gears, pulleys, and other components.
